Tulips are one of those flowers that seem to bring spring into the house. They are known all over the world, have a long history and, unlike other bouquet flowers, are bought with a season in mind: they appear when winter ends and fade with the heat. This guide covers where they come from, when their season is, what each colour is usually associated with, how to care for them and where you can see tulip fields.

A note that applies to the whole guide: the meanings of flowers are cultural conventions, not rules, and they vary between countries and eras. If you are new to Uruguay or sending flowers from abroad, what counts most is always the gesture and the card that goes with it.

Tulips: origin and season

The tulip comes from Central Asia and the mountainous parts of the region. It was cultivated for centuries in the Ottoman Empire and reached western Europe in the second half of the 16th century. The Netherlands took to it so enthusiastically that in the 17th century it went through the famous “tulip mania”, a period of very high prices for bulbs. Today the Netherlands remains a world centre of bulb production.

Botanically, the tulip is a cool-climate bulb. It needs a cold period in winter to flower and blooms at the end of winter or in spring. In the southern hemisphere that usually means late winter to spring, roughly August to November. In Uruguay, depending on the supplier, florist tulips can come from imported bulbs or from crops forced in greenhouses, and the choice is likely to be larger in winter and spring and smaller the rest of the year. We cannot promise what is available in a given month: it depends on the supplier.

Tulip meanings by colour

As with other flowers, meanings are a guide. These are the most common:

  • Red tulips: love and romantic declaration. According to some Persian and Turkish legends, the red tulip stands for ardent love.
  • Pink tulips: affection, tenderness and gratitude. They are the softest and most versatile: they suit a mother, sister, friend or partner.
  • White tulips: calm, respect and, in some lists, forgiveness or new beginnings. They work well as a restrained gift.
  • Yellow tulips: today they are read mostly as joy and good spirits. In some historical “language of flowers” lists yellow had a more melancholy meaning, but that is an old reading that is hardly used now. They are a great option for 21 September.
  • Violet or lilac tulips: admiration and elegance. There are very dark, almost black varieties, used for a dramatic effect.
  • Orange tulips: energy and enthusiasm, good for celebrating something.
  • Bicolour or fringed: chosen mainly for their look, and their meanings blend.

Blue tulips: natural or dyed

As with roses, pure blue tulips do not exist. What is sold as “blue” is usually a white tulip that has been dyed, or lilac and violet varieties that come close to that tone. If you want a blue tulip, it is worth knowing that the colour comes from dye and can vary between bouquets.

How to care for a tulip bouquet

Tulips are more delicate than other flowers in one respect: they keep growing after they are cut. The stems lengthen and curve towards the light. These guidelines help:

  • Trim the stems at an angle, a couple of centimetres, as soon as you get home.
  • Fresh, clean water in a clean vase. Some florists recommend only a little water in the vase and changing it every one or two days.
  • A cool spot, away from direct sun, heaters and ripe fruit, which releases ethylene gas and shortens the life of flowers.
  • Do not mix them with daffodils without checking: daffodil sap can shorten the life of tulips in the same vase.
  • Support the stems: if you want them upright, tie the bunch with a rubber band before putting it in water, or let them curve; that looks lovely too.

With this care, a tulip bouquet usually lasts about a week. The petals open fully and then fall: it is part of their cycle.

Tulip fields

If you like tulips up close, there are some well-known destinations:

  • The Netherlands: the most famous. The bulb-growing region, with parks such as Keukenhof, is visited in the northern-hemisphere spring, roughly between March and May.
  • Trevelin, Chubut (Argentina): there is a tulip field open to the public in the southern spring, generally between October and November. Since it depends on the weather, check the dates with the field itself before travelling.
  • Uruguay: we have no confirmed information about tulip fields open to the public in the country. If you come across one, it is probably a one-off seasonal offer; check the venue’s social media.

How to choose by person

  • Partner: red or pink.
  • Mother, grandmother, sister: pink or white.
  • Friend: yellow, orange or a mix.
  • Thank-you: pink or white.
  • Celebration or spring: a mix of colours.

Frequently asked questions

What do red tulips mean?
They are linked to love and romantic declarations. It is the most direct tulip colour, so if you want to avoid confusion, choose pink or yellow.
Do blue tulips exist?
There are no pure blue tulips: the tulip lacks the pigment needed. Those that look blue are usually dyed; the closest in nature are lilac and violet ones.
How long does a tulip bouquet last?
With good care, usually around a week. Tulips keep growing in the vase, so the stems stretch and lean; that is normal.
Where are there tulip fields?
The most famous is the bulb region of the Netherlands, visited in the northern spring. In Argentina there are tulip fields in Trevelin, Chubut, open to the public in the southern spring. Check dates before you go.
