Few flowers get such an immediate reaction as the sunflower: big, yellow and with a face that seems to look back at you. It is given to cheer people up, it has been painted for centuries and in Uruguay it is also a summer farm crop. This guide covers what giving sunflowers means, what lies behind Van Gogh’s sunflowers, what is known about sunflower fields in Uruguay and how to care for a bouquet.
As with any flower guide, a note: meanings are cultural conventions, not rules. A bouquet of sunflowers says a lot by itself, and what counts most is the card that goes with it.
Meaning of sunflowers
The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is linked above all to joy, warmth and vitality. It is the flower of simple, bright things. Other common readings:
- Loyalty and devotion: because of the idea that it “looks at the sun”, it is often taken as a symbol of constancy.
- Optimism: a bouquet of sunflowers is used to lift spirits, congratulate or wish someone good news.
- Friendship: it works very well as a gift to friends, colleagues and family, without the romantic tone of a red rose.
- Admiration: because of its size and presence, it is also given to recognise an achievement.
Do they really follow the sun?
This is one of the most repeated things about sunflowers and it is only partly true. Young plants, before the flower opens, turn during the day to follow the sun (a movement called heliotropism). Once the flower matures, the stem stiffens and the head stays fixed, usually facing east. A mature sunflower does not follow you with its gaze.
Van Gogh’s sunflowers
Vincent van Gogh painted several versions of “Sunflowers” in Arles, in the south of France, in the late 1880s. He painted them as bouquets in a vase, with a palette of yellows that became unmistakable. Several versions of the series exist, held in museums in different countries. Today Van Gogh’s sunflowers are such a strong cultural reference that many people link the flower with that style, and seeing them in a bouquet recalls those paintings. If you want a gift with an artistic air, a bouquet of sunflowers alone in a simple vase works very well.
Sunflower fields in Uruguay
In Uruguay the sunflower is a summer farm crop, sown at the beginning of spring and flowering roughly between December and January, depending on the year and the sowing date. It is grown for seeds and oil, not as a tourist attraction, so it is not usually promoted as one, as happens in other countries.
What can be said with confidence:
- Season: the most spectacular moment is usually midsummer, with the crop in flower. Dates change every year.
- Areas: the crop tends to be concentrated in the farming areas of the country’s western and coastal belt. We give no specific locations because they change from one season to the next and are almost always private working fields.
- How to see them: sometimes they can be glimpsed from the road without going in. If you want to take photos up close, ask the owner’s permission and do not enter a field on your own: it is private property and the crop is someone’s livelihood.
- One-off offers: from time to time a grower or farm opens a flower field to visitors in season. If you are interested, check the venue’s social media and verify dates and conditions, because they change.
A practical tip: go early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when the light is softer, and bring repellent and water.
How to care for a sunflower bouquet
Florist sunflowers are cut-flower varieties, bred for bouquets. They are thirsty flowers with heavy heads:
- Trim the stems at an angle as soon as you get home.
- Remove the leaves that would sit under the water so they do not rot and foul the vase.
- Use a tall, stable vase with plenty of water. Check the level every day, because they drink more than other flowers.
- Change the water every two days or when it turns cloudy.
- A cool spot, away from direct sun, heaters and ripe fruit.
- Pollen: some bouquet varieties are sold pollen-free so they make less mess on the table.
With this care, a sunflower bouquet usually lasts about a week. If a head droops, trim a little more off the stem and top up the water.
What goes well with sunflowers
The sunflower shines alone, but it also works with:
- Daisies and white flowers: to soften the yellow.
- Yellow or orange roses: for a warm bouquet. See the guide to yellow flowers for 21 September.
- Green foliage: eucalyptus or ferns, which frame the big heads.
- Blue or violet flowers: for contrast.
