The same question comes up every year: what to give mum. Flowers are a classic that never fails, but there is no single bouquet for every mother. The one who loves roses is not the same as the one who prefers something modern, or the one whose balcony is full of plants. In this guide we share flower ideas for mum based on her style, how to pair them with another gift, card messages, how to plan for Mother’s Day and her birthday, and what to do if you live far away and want to send her flowers from another country.
Flowers for mum based on her style
Before you choose, think about her: the colours she wears, how she decorates her home, which flowers she has in the garden or on the windowsill. Those clues are worth more than any trend.
- Classic mum. Pink, white or cream roses, on their own or with a little greenery. They are elegant and express love and gratitude simply.
- Romantic mum. A pastel mix of roses, lisianthus and a seasonal flower, in pinks, lilacs and whites. If the season is right, peonies and ranunculus make an unforgettable gift.
- Cheerful mum. Sunflowers, gerberas, yellow or orange flowers. Bouquets that brighten the house and do not take themselves too seriously.
- Modern or minimalist mum. A single flower type in quantity, such as tulips in one colour or white calla lilies. Few flowers, well chosen, with simple wrapping.
- Mum who loves plants. A potted orchid lasts weeks or months and keeps flowering with good care. It is a gift that stays with her much longer than a bouquet.
- Practical mum. A bouquet with a vase included, so she does not have to find somewhere to put it, or long-lasting flowers such as chrysanthemums and alstroemerias.
If you are not sure, a seasonal bouquet in soft tones is a safe bet. Because we work with seasonal flowers, the mix may vary slightly from day to day, but always respecting the colours and style you chose.
Flowers plus a gift: combinations that work
Flowers look great on their own, but they can also go with another gift. Some ideas you can add yourself:
- Flowers and breakfast. A bouquet arrives in the morning, and you turn up with croissants.
- Flowers and a book. Choose one you have talked about together or by her favourite author, and write a dedication on the first page.
- Flowers and a photo. A printed photo of a lovely moment you shared, in a simple frame.
- Flowers and a plan together. A lunch, a walk, or a day when you take care of everything.
- An experience with flowers. If she likes working with her hands, a floral workshop is a different kind of gift: she makes her own bouquet and takes it home. We explain how they work in our guide to floral workshops.
- Flowers all year round. With the flower subscription she receives a weekly, biweekly or monthly bouquet in size S, M or L, plus a vase and pruning shears as a gift. It is a present that keeps coming back and reminds her each time that you are thinking of her.
What to write on the card
The card is often the part that gets kept. You do not need a poem: something short and sincere is enough. Some ideas to inspire you:
- “Thank you for always being there. I love you.”
- “To the woman who taught me to water the plants, and everything else.”
- “Happy day, mum. Today and every day.”
- “I miss you so much. This bouquet comes with a big hug.”
- “For all the times I did not say thank you.”
- “Happy birthday to the strongest person I know.”
Best of all is adding something of your own: a nickname, a memory, a phrase she always says. With our bouquets you can include a handwritten card with your message.
Mother’s Day in Uruguay: how to plan ahead
In Uruguay Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, in the middle of autumn. It is one of the busiest dates of the year, so it pays to plan:
- Order ahead. A few days early you have more choice of flowers and time slots.
- Choose the day and the slot. We deliver across all of Montevideo in the slot you prefer: 8–12, 12–16 or 16–20.
- Think autumn flowers. In May roses have a lovely flush and chrysanthemums are at their best. Peonies, on the other hand, are not usually in season at that time.
- Do not forget grandmothers, mothers-in-law and aunts. A small bouquet for each of them is a gesture that is remembered.
On our Mother’s Day flowers page we have gathered bouquets designed for the date.
For her birthday, or just because
Mother’s Day is one date, but not the only one. A bouquet for her birthday, or for no reason at all, often surprises her even more precisely because nobody expects it. For a birthday, colourful, cheerful bouquets work very well; see our ideas for birthday flowers. And if you want the gesture to be ongoing, the subscription brings fresh flowers to her home all year.
If you live far away: sending flowers from abroad
Many people live outside Uruguay and have their mum in Montevideo, or the other way round. Sending flowers is a way of being present even with thousands of kilometres in between. At Klumba Flores we keep it simple:
- Online ordering. Choose the bouquet in the catalog, add it to the cart and place the order on the site. The florist writes to you to confirm the details.
- Direct contact. If you prefer, message us on WhatsApp, Telegram or Instagram. We take orders from 8:00 to 20:00, Montevideo time.
- Payments from abroad. We accept foreign cards and banks, crypto, Mercado Pago and bank transfer.
- Your message, by hand. We write the card by hand in your words, so it arrives in your voice.
We have a page with all the details on sending flowers to Uruguay from abroad.
In short
To decide what to give mum, think about her style: roses for a classic mum, pastel tones for a romantic one, sunflowers for a cheerful one, tulips or calla lilies for a modern one and an orchid for one who loves plants. Add a card with something personal and, if you like, a gift or an experience. For Mother’s Day, order ahead. Choose her bouquet in the catalog, add it to the cart and place the order on the site; the florist will write to you to confirm.
