Knowing the seasonal flowers in Uruguay helps you choose a better bouquet: in-season flowers usually arrive fresher, last longer in the vase and reflect the time of year. Because Uruguay is in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are the reverse of Europe or the United States: spring runs from September to November, summer from December to February, autumn from March to May and winter from June to August. In this guide we go through the flowers that usually appear in each season, with a month-by-month calendar at the end.

An important note before we start: this calendar is a guide. Florists work with locally grown, greenhouse and imported flowers, so many flowers are available outside their natural season. On top of that, each year’s weather brings blooming forward or pushes it back. Take it as a guide to what is usually plentiful, not a closed list.

Why it pays to choose seasonal flowers

  • More freshness. A seasonal flower usually travels less and spends less time between being cut and reaching your vase. That means more days of life.
  • Better quality. When a flower is at its peak there is more supply and the florist can pick the best stems.
  • Better value. Out of season, the same flower comes from a greenhouse or another country, which adds cost.
  • Bouquets that mean something. A bouquet of tulips in spring or sunflowers in summer says something about the season it is given in.
  • Variety through the year. Choosing by season leads you to discover flowers you may not have known.

Spring in Uruguay (September to November)

Spring is the most generous season. Many bulb and cool-climate flowers are at their best, and as it goes on the most romantic flowers arrive.

  • Tulips: their best time runs from late winter into spring. They may come from imported bulbs or forced growing, depending on the supplier. See our tulip bouquets.
  • Freesias: fragrant and delicate, typical of late winter and spring.
  • Ranunculus and anemones: many-petalled flowers in intense colours, very popular for bridal bouquets and gifts.
  • Hyacinths and star-of-Bethlehem: bulb flowers that pair very well with tulips.
  • Calla lilies: very common in Uruguayan gardens from winter into spring.
  • Sweet peas: light and fragrant, with a short season.
  • Peonies: they usually appear towards late spring and early summer, often imported. Their season is short and eagerly awaited.
  • Roses: with the warmth they bloom strongly again.

21 September, the first day of spring, is the big date for yellow flowers. We cover it in our guide to yellow flowers on 21 September.

Summer (December to February)

Summer brings big flowers, strong colours and lots of light.

  • Sunflowers: the symbol of summer. Cheerful, long-lasting and easy to combine. See our sunflower bouquets.
  • Hydrangeas: in Uruguay they are associated with the end-of-year holidays; they bloom mainly in December and January.
  • Agapanthus: the blue or white flowers that fill flowerbeds and the coast in high summer.
  • Lisianthus: rose-like in appearance, with soft petals and pastel tones.
  • Dahlias: from summer into autumn, in a huge range of shapes and colours.
  • Zinnias and cosmos: simple, colourful garden flowers.
  • Gladioli and lilies: tall stems for arrangements with presence.

In summer the heat calls for more care: cool water, frequent changes and keeping the bouquet out of the sun.

Autumn (March to May)

Autumn brings temperatures down and shifts the palette towards warmer tones.

  • Chrysanthemums: the autumn flower par excellence, as pompoms, daisies and large blooms, from white to burgundy.
  • Dahlias: still around at the start of autumn.
  • Asters and wild-looking flowers: ideal for bouquets with a countryside feel.
  • Roses: they have a lovely second flush in the cooler weather.
  • Foliage and berries: branches, autumn leaves and berries such as hypericum add texture.

Autumn is also when Mother’s Day falls in Uruguay, on the second Sunday of May. It is one of the busiest dates of the year for florists; we have ideas on our Mother’s Day flowers page.

Winter (June to August)

Winter seems like the season with the fewest flowers, but it has its gems.

  • Camellias: they bloom in the depths of winter, in white, pink and red.
  • Calla lilies: elegant and very long-lasting in the vase.
  • Stocks: with a sweet scent, typical of winter and early spring.
  • Mimosa: its yellow pompoms announce the end of winter.
  • Daffodils and hyacinths: towards the end of winter the bulb flowers begin.
  • Waxflower: small waxy flowers that are often imported and last a long time.
  • Potted orchids: an option that lasts for weeks and can be enjoyed at any time of year.

A winter bouquet can be just as lovely as a spring one: white calla lilies with greenery, camellias in a low vase or a bunch of mimosa have a special charm on grey days.

In addition, thanks to greenhouse growing and imports, some flowers are available almost all year: roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, alstroemerias, gerberas, gypsophila and potted phalaenopsis orchids. They form the base of many bouquets and are combined with seasonal flowers to add variety.

A practical tip: if you do not know what is in season, ask for a seasonal bouquet and tell the florist which colours the recipient likes, who it is for and what the occasion is. With that, she picks the best of what came in that day, and the bouquet turns out fresher than if you insist on an out-of-season flower.

At Klumba Flores we work with seasonal flowers, so the mix in a bouquet may vary slightly depending on what comes in each day. If you would like the season delivered to your home regularly, the flower subscription brings a weekly, biweekly or monthly bouquet in size S, M or L, with a vase and pruning shears as a gift.

Which flowers are in season in winter in Uruguay?
From June to August camellias, calla lilies, stocks and mimosa are typical, and towards the end of winter daffodils, freesias and hyacinths appear. Potted orchids are a great option all year round.

Often, yes: florists also work with imported and greenhouse flowers. Roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, alstroemerias and gerberas, for example, are available almost all year. Availability depends on the supplier.
